Struggling Goats look for first win at Vancouver

Apr 15, 2011 - 7:38 PM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Chivas USA will be gunning for its first win of the Major League Soccer season when it travels to take on the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Empire Field on Saturday.

The Goats (0-2-2) have scored just one goal in their past three games,

"This is a results oriented business," Chivas USA coach Robin Fraser told his club's website. "Of course we want to get a win. We want to get a whole lot of wins, and obviously it starts with the first one. It'll be great to get that monkey of our back, but our goal is long-term. We want to be a playoff team and we want to be a championship team."

The team has shown improvement, earning back-to-back draws after starting the season with two losses.

"It's a long season," Fraser said. "We're heading in the right direction. We will continue to work and we will continue to get better. No team has outplayed us yet, we've been in every game. I think it's just a matter of getting things clicking."

Vancouver (1-2-2), on the other hand, is unbeaten at home in three matches to start its first season in MLS.

The team is coming off a 3-1 loss at Houston last weekend and hopes to rebound on its home field on Saturday.

"I'm definitely not happy with the result," Whitecaps FC coach Teitur Thordarson told his club's website. "I thought our first half was decent, as we kept our shape quite well. We didn't manage to create many chances, though we did score one goal. However, we let in two set-piece goals in the first half, which we should never have conceded. These were mistakes from our side. In the second half, I thought our team struggled to find the energy needed to get back into the match. That allowed things to open up and gave Houston the opportunity to create more chances on us."

Vancouver will have to find a way to correct its mistakes without the services of midfielder Michael Nanchoff and defender Greg Janicki because of injuries and Gershon Koffie because of an international absence. Also, defender Jay DeMerit and midfielders Terry Dunfield, Shea Salinas and John Thorrington are listed as questionable, all with injury knocks.

Chivas USA will be without forward Tristan Bowen and midfielder Blair Gavin, while defender Jimmy Conrad, and midfielder Paulo Nagamura and Mariano Trujillo are questionable, all with injuries.
