Fire host 'Caps in battle of one-win teams

May 6, 2011 - 9:18 PM Bridgeview, IL (Sports Network) - Vancouver Whitecaps FC travels to take on the Chicago Fire in a battle of one-win teams at Toyota Park on Saturday.

Vancouver will be trying to snap out of an eight-game winless run, while Chicago will be aiming to earn the full points for the first time in a relatively modest five-game span.

Chicago is coming off back-to-back 1-1 draws, including allowing a second-half equalizer to Colorado last Saturday.

"We've been [making mental errors] since way back," Chicago defender Gonzalo Segares told mlssoccer.com. "It was the same mistakes in Portland, in Seattle, just little mistakes that can be eliminated with maturity. I think we have a young group and that's how we're going to learn. It's just going back to the video, trying to see what we did wrong and trying to fix it so it doesn't happen again."

If Chicago is going to find a way to be successful on Saturday, it is going to have to iron out the wrinkles in what has been an inconsistent backline this season.

"I think we're going to have our hands full," Segares said. "They're definitely really dangerous up top. They have guys with a lot of mobility and a lot of experience so it's definitely going to be a tough game."

Vancouver is coming off back-to-back losses while also losing three of the last four, including a 2-1 loss at Columbus last weekend.

"I thought we played well, even though we decided to play a bit differently than we would normally," Vancouver coach Teitur Thordarson told his club's website. "We allowed Columbus to have possession in their own half and looked to hit them on counter-attacks," said Whitecaps FC head coach Teitur Thordarson. "Unfortunately, we made mistakes that led to their goals in the second half, so that was disappointing to see."

A bright spot was the fact that 17-year-old rookie Omar Salgado scored his first MLS goal in the loss.

"To see Omar score his first goal will be special for him because this was his first real start in MLS," Thordarson said. "In fact, he was unfortunate not to score two or more goals."

Vancouver will need Salgado to show the same type of form to be successful on Saturday.
