Short-handed New York continues road trip in Seattle
Jun 23, 2011 - 1:41 AM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - The Gold Cup has already left Red Bull New York without the services of Rafael Marquez, Juan Agudelo and Tim Ream, and now with Thierry Henry serving a suspension, a short-handed New York side visits CenturyLink Field to take on Seattle Sounders FC on Thursday.Henry received a straight red card in the closing minutes of New York's 3-3 draw with the Portland Timbers on Sunday, and with fellow striker Luke Rodgers set to miss Thursday's match because of a foot injury, Red Bulls boss Hans Backe will be short on options up top.
The team has put together a six-game unbeaten run, but five of those matches have ended in draws, and you could say that Backe's side was fortunate to get a point in Portland considering the equalizer came from the penalty spot on the final kick of the game from Dwayne De Rosario.
Sunday's match in Portland marks the first of four successive away matches for the Red Bulls, and De Rosario is hoping that New York can come away with some good results before heading back home.
"Games like that take a lot out of you mentally, physically and emotionally," De Rosario said. "We're too good of a team to dominate teams like that in the first half and then turn around and have the complete opposite in the second half. Hopefully we can pick up seven points out of the next three games."
After Seattle, New York heads to Chicago on Sunday and rounds out the trip in San Jose.
Seattle also got some late heroics in its last match as Fredy Montero's free kick in stoppage time found the back of the net to give the Sounders a 1-0 win over Toronto FC.
The victory was even more impressive considering Seattle played the majority of the second half with 10 men as defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado received his second yellow card in the 49th minute.
In addition to Hurtado missing Thursday's match through suspension, Seattle will also be without Brad Evans, who suffered an ankle injury in the Toronto match.
Seattle has lost only one time in its last eight games, and is looking to improve its record at home, which currently stands at 3-3-2.
