Seattle sinks New York in front of 46,065

Jun 24, 2011 - 4:37 AM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Roger Levesque sat on top of the advertising boards surrounding CenturyLink Field, pinched his nose and leaned back to fall toward the crowd of 46,065 on Thursday night.

Substitute Levesque scored twice in the second half, only outdoing his play on the field with his celebration - simulating diving into the water - as Seattle Sounders FC beat Red Bull New York, 4-2, in Major League Soccer.

Erik Friberg and Osvaldo Alonso scored one-minute apart early in the game and, after a Dane Richards goal and an own goal pulled New York even, Levesque came off the bench to score in the 67th and 78th minutes.

Seattle (7-4-7) extended its unbeaten streak to five, and improved to 4-2-3 at home in front of the largest MLS crowd in Sounders history. Seattle moved into a tie with FC Dallas for second in the Western Conference.

New York (5-3-8) lost for the first time in its last seven games, but also has just one win in its last nine. The Red Bulls are still even on points with the Philadelphia Union atop the Eastern Conference.

Seattle took the lead just after 10 minutes when Friberg latched onto a failed clearance off a corner and curled a shot from just outside the penalty area to the right post.

Alonso followed just one minute later, again off a busted corner, as he gained control off a clearance and sent a shot back through traffic that deflected to the left post and past New York goalie Greg Sutton.

Richards pulled a goal back in the 31st minute with a perfectly-placed shot to the far post that skipped off Seattle goalie Kasey Keller's hands and into the net.

Seattle's Zach Scott tied the match when he directed Jan Gunnar Solli's cross past Keller for an own goal in the 58th.

But Levesque rescued Seattle, reaching a corner kick from Leo Gonzalez to turn a header from the near side past Sutton to the far post for his first goal of the season.

Sutton gifted the last goal as he lost possession to Levesque just outside the area, and the Sounders forward slotted into an empty net for his second goal - he had just three career goals entering the match.

Levesque looked like a veteran at celebrating, as his second goal resulted in the scuba-entry dive off the boards and back onto the ground to the excitement of the huge crowd in Seattle.

Seattle hosts New England on Sunday in its next game, while New York will have Thierry Henry back Sunday at the Chicago Fire.
