D.C. tops San Jose to continue impressive road form
Jul 31, 2011 - 6:04 AM Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - D.C. United continued its impressive road form by defeating the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday. The opening period was very tame with few chances for either team.
The best chance in the first half came to Chris Pontius in the 18th minute. The D.C. United midfielder kept close control through traffic and hit a shot that went just wide of the far post.
After failing to record a shot on goal in the first half, D.C. United came out in the second half with much more conviction, forcing Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch to make several key saves in the opening minutes.
D.C. United finally broke through in the 57th minute with a goal from Dwayne De Rosario.
De Rosario latched onto a ball played over the top of the San Jose back four. He settled the ball before curling a shot over Busch, who was caught creeping off of his goal line.
D.C. United doubled its lead ten minutes later through another De Rosario goal.
The Canadian international played a one-two with Pontius before hitting a laser into the far upper corner of the goal.
San Jose caught a break in the 70th minute after United midfielder Andy Najar was shown a red card for bringing down Joey Gjertsen, who had a clear path to the goal.
But San Jose failed to capitalize on the man advantage, as the match ended without a goal from the 'Quakes.
D.C. United continues to impress on the road as it now holds a 4-3-3 record away from RFK Stadium.
Both teams return to MLS action on August 6th, as United (6-6-8) will host a struggling Toronto FC and the 'Quakes (5-8-9) will host the Portland Timbers.
