Sporting streak snapped by late Sounders goals

Aug 7, 2011 - 2:48 AM Kansas City, KS (Sports Network) - Sporting Kansas City fell to Seattle Sounders FC 2-1 Saturday night, preventing the club from extending its unbeaten streak in Major League Soccer regular season play to an astonishing 15 games.

Ironically enough, it was the Sounders who last defeated Sporting, beating the Kansas City club 1-0 during a long road spell prior to the opening of Livestrong Sporting Park.

Sporting looked on its way to extending the streak with a 20th minute goal from Kei Kamara, but two very late Seattle strikes gave the Sounders all three points and the distinction of becoming the first visiting team to win at Livestrong Sporting Park.

In the first half, a long throw-in was sent into the box where Kamara slipped in front of his mark and headed his shot past Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller to give Sporting the lead.

The match turned ugly in the 59th minute as Sporting captain Omar Bravo was sent off for a reckless challenge on Pat Noonan.

The two players were face-to-face when Bravo immediately went to ground, simulating a head-butt from Noonan and slightly escalating the skirmish.

The Sounders finally capitalized on the man advantage in the 90th minute, as Mauro Rosales brought Seattle level with a low shot that found the bottom corner of the net.

Seattle miraculously went ahead moments later when Lamar Neagle curled a loose ball through traffic and past Sporting goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen.

The win gives Seattle (11-5-8) 41 points on the season, good enough for third place in the Western Conference. The Sounders will return home to face Chivas USA at CenturyLink Field on August 13th.

Sporting Kansas City (7-7-9) remains tied for third place in the Eastern Conference with 30 points on the season. The club will stay at home to host the Portland Timbers in a midweek match on August 17th.
