Vancouver's Soehn returns to RFK to face United

Aug 12, 2011 - 10:40 PM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - A familiar face will return to RFK Stadium on Saturday when D.C. United host Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Vancouver technical director and interim head coach Tom Soehn was at the helm of D.C. United from 2007-09, leading the team to a Supporters' Shield in 2007.

D.C. United is coming off of a heated 3-3 draw with Toronto FC that saw goalkeeper Bill Hamid and head coach Ben Olsen sent off.

With Olsen suspended, Soehn will square-off against his former assistant at United, Chad Ashton.

Sitting in last place in the Western Conference, Vancouver has only managed 18 points so far, the fewest in Major League Soccer to date.

The Whitecaps showed bright spots in their last match, defeating the Chicago Fire 4-2 at Empire Field behind an Eric Hassli brace.

Ashton believes it was the type of performance that underlines the fact that the 'Caps cannot be taken lightly.

"I think the biggest difficulty for them has been injuries," Ashton told MLSsoccer.com. "They're a much different team when they're healthy. You saw them play Chicago, they dismantled Chicago [last weekend]."

United look to make a late push for the playoffs, as they sit in sixth place in the East with 27 points, seven points adrift of the first place Columbus Crew. D.C. also has two games in hand.

D.C. United are led by standout attacker Dwayne De Rosario, who recorded a hat trick in the club's draw with Toronto. The performance was good enough to garner MLS Player of the Week honors for the Canadian international for the second consecutive week.

De Rosario's impressive form has led to a resurgence in results for D.C. United, as the club has gone 2-1-2 in its last five matches.

Vancouver will be looking to build upon its win against Chicago, as it searches for its first road victory of the season.
