United out to end woes against Sporting
May 17, 2013 - 10:34 PM Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - After snapping the Houston Dynamo's record home unbeaten streak last weekend, Sporting Kansas City hopes to continue the losing streak of struggling D.C. United on Sunday.A 73rd-minute goal from Aurelien Collin was enough to snap the Dynamo's 36- game home unbeaten streak, and maybe more importantly, it gave Sporting three points.
The club had lost three of its last four games prior to the Dynamo contest, and Collin believes the win will help to turn around the confidence of the team, which dipped a bit over the past month.
"It's very good for the mentality of the team and for the confidence of the team," Collin said of the win. "We proved to ourselves that even if we make a few mistakes, it's OK. The last five games, we have not been consistent, and so tonight we went back to the way we have to play and I'm very happy with the team."
Sporting has won its last five meetings with United, so three more points against the struggling hosts will be expected.
United has lost its last seven matches and eight of its first 10 games to start the season, leaving head coach Ben Olsen to take small positives wherever he can.
After losing its previous two matches by a combined score of 7-0, D.C. was locked in a 1-1 game at halftime against FC Dallas last weekend.
But the club once more found a way to lose as Je-Vaughn Watson scored 13 minutes from time to win the game for Dallas.
"I was proud about the overall commitment and the way they went about things tonight," Olsen said after the Dallas defeat. "The spirit was good. They looked like a team that cared and wanted to dig themselves out of the situation they we're in. That's important. But it's also important to make teams earn goals. We're still slipping at the key moments. We're still giving up set pieces. These have to stop."
Stopping these mistakes will be easier said then done for a team that appears to be stuck in a tailspin.
United midfielder Marcos Sanchez summed up the current state of the team best when he said, "We always try to play the game in the best way possible but we commit too many mistakes."
