United, Sporting KC draw at RFK
May 19, 2013 - 11:07 PM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - D.C. United's winless run in league play reached nine consecutive matches on Sunday after the club battled to a 1-1 draw with Sporting Kansas City at RFK Stadium.Scoring chances were difficult to come by for both clubs in the first half, but Sporting had the best opportunity in the 30th minute when Jacob Peterson slipped a pass through the D.C. backline to Ike Opara, who tapped it home, but the assistant referee's flag was up for offside as the clubs went into the break on level terms.
The action picked up in the second half and Kansas City struck first on the hour mark when Graham Zusi whipped a corner kick into the United penalty area and the ball deflected off D.C. defender Ethan White and past goalkeeper Bill Hamid to put the visitors ahead 1-0.
But United found its equalizer just five minutes later when Chris Pontius ripped a cross toward the far post where Kyle Porter was there to direct it past Sporting goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen.
Both teams sent numbers forward in search of a winning goal and Sporting had one last fantastic chance 10 minutes from time Claudio Bieler pounced on a loose ball just outside the box and fired a low shot, but it narrowly missed the right post and the sides settled for a point apiece.
D.C. United remains in the basement of the Eastern Conference with five points and has not won since a 1-0 result against Real Salt Lake on March 9, while Sporting improves to 21 points from 13 matches.
