Sounders go for sixth straight win against Revs

May 9, 2014 - 8:13 PM Foxborough, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Seattle Sounders FC will aim to continue its white-hot form on Sunday when the club goes for a sixth consecutive victory in league play against the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium.

Seattle engineered another late show on Wednesday, earning a 2-1 victory over Western Conference rivals FC Dallas at CenturyLink Field.

FC Dallas opened the scoring in the 14th minute on a converted penalty by Michel after defender Brad Evans was whistled for a foul in the box.

But the Sounders leveled the match in the 62nd minute as Clint Dempsey played a ball wide to Obafemi Martins, who then crossed it to Lamar Neagle for a one- touch finish to the near post. It was Neagle's fourth goal of the season.

The Sounders then another a late winner through substitute Kenny Cooper, who , scored in the 88th minute when Martins sent a cross into the box. Cooper placed the ball under a diving Raul Fernandez to mark Seattle's fifth-straight game with a goal in the final 15 minutes.

The club has also scored in the final 10 minutes of matches seven times this season. The result also saw the Sounders complete a sweep of a three-match home stand.

"We couldn't have done any better. We got maximum points from those games and now we move forward," Dempsey said.

"We always believe we are going to win," Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid said. "I think our team played some very good soccer. They never lost hope and faith, and continued to show good character and battled well."

New England, meanwhile, enters Sunday's clash in fine form, riding a four- match unbeaten streak in league play to sit in a first-place tie atop the East with 14 points.

The Revs are coming off an impressive 2-1 victory over Toronto FC last week at BMO Field.

Toronto opened the scoring in the sixth minute through a goal from Jackson, but the Revs responded with a tying tally in the 24th minute when rookie Patrick Mullins smashed one past TFC goalkeeper Julio Cesar from 20 yards out.

New England created its winning moment eight minutes from time when TFC's Doniel Henry was whistled for a handball in the box, resulting in a penalty kick which Lee Nguyen converted to seal the points.

"It's really difficult when you start slow, and they capitalized on that scoring early. The first half was very open, it could have been 2-2 and I thought that the team fought hard and found a way to win as we didn't play our best so that is always nice."

Dempsey will make his return to Gillette Stadium to face the club that drafted him back in 2004.

The U.S. international spent three seasons with the Revs, following up a Rookie of the Year campaign in 2004 with MLS Best XI selections in 2005 and 2006, helping guide the Revs to MLS Cup appearances in his final two years.

"We're looking forward to the game," said Revs midfielder Andy Dorman. "It's definitely the sort of game you want to be playing in. I'm excited to see [Clint] and play against him, because I haven't since the last time he was here in training. It'll be good."
