Ghana ready for fight against Germany

Jul 10, 2014 - 1:17 AM Fortaleza, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) - Ghana's Kevin-Prince Boateng has vowed that his team won't go down without a fight against Germany in its second match in Group G play at the Estadio Castelao on Saturday.

Ghana will feel a bit unlucky to have lost 2-1 to the United States in its first match of the tournament after John Anthony Brooks headed home the winning goal from a corner kick four minutes from time.

The Americans took the lead in the opening minute of the match through Clint Dempsey, but from there, the Black Stars controlled much of the play and were finally rewarded with a goal in the 82nd minute from Andre Ayew.

Ghana was clearly the fresher side, and figured to press for a winner over the final eight minutes, but the U.S. made the most of a rare chance to steal the win, leaving the African nation in danger of crashing out with a loss to Germany.

Boateng's team won't be favored to win the game, but he has promised that Ghana will approach the game much like a gladiator entering the arena.

"It's like in ancient Rome. There will be people around the pitch who want to see how two teams fight," Boateng told Sport Bild. "The team who wants it more will win and we will fight to the death against Germany."

Germany will expect Ghana to be up for the match with their World Cup survival on the line, but the Germans will be extremely confident following a 4-0 thrashing of Portugal in their opener.

Thomas Muller scored a hat trick for Germany and Mats Hummels added another goal to make an emphatic statement about the German's intent in this tournament.

"We started the game well and everything went brilliantly for us. We had chances at the start and the second goal came from a dead-ball situation and gave us a pretty big cushion," said Muller, who became the first player since Miroslav Klose in 2002 to score a hat trick in a World Cup game. "We made the most of our chances and though the second goal didn't exactly kill the game, we knew it would be difficult for them to come back, even more so with just 10 men."

Pepe was sent off with Portugal down 2-0, and Germany cruised home from there, although Ghana will likely present more of a challenge.

One of the only negatives from the opening match for Germany was a thigh injury suffered by Hummels, which could prevent him from featuring against Ghana.

If the Germans claim all three points, they could potentially clinch a place in the next round if the United States and Portugal finish in a draw on Sunday.
