SKC out to extend unbeaten run against Vancouver

Aug 9, 2014 - 3:17 AM Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Sporting Kansas City will look to make it nine straight league games without a loss when the club heads to BC Place to face Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Sunday.

Kansas City has not tasted defeat in MLS regular season play since falling to D.C. United at RFK Stadium on May 31.

The club has gone on to produce a 6-0-2 record since that defeat, putting SKC atop the overall MLS table with 39 points for the season.

Sporting most recently saw its four-game winning run come to end as it was held to a 1-1 draw by the Philadelphia Union last Friday, a result that left head coach Peter Vermes quite sour.

"We want to win," Vermes said. "I don't know what else to say. We want to win, and we want to get the points. That's why you see us go play the way we do on the road as well. We want to win, and we're disappointed. We're disappointed not coming out of that game with three points."

Graham Zusi made his third consecutive start and fourth overall since returning from the World Cup with the U.S. national team, scoring for the second consecutive match. The U.S. international shed some light on what made the three points against Philadelphia so elusive.

"It's always a little harder when the other team puts numbers behind the ball," said Zusi. "But we're used to that and we know how to play against that. We can't use it as an excuse for not winning. We just weren't quite good enough. So that's disappointing."

Vancouver has drawn its last four MLS matches, a streak the club will be looking to snap with a victory against Sporting on Sunday.

The 'Caps enter the weekend in sixth place on 29 points, just one point back of a playoff spot.

"It's not nice drawing all these games, but we're picking things up as we go along," Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson said. "We want to win more. We know we need to win more if we're going to get to our end target this year and that'll continue for the next 13-odd games."

Vancouver's 0-0 draw with the Chicago Fire last time out marks the club's first shutout in league play since May 10.

"I thought it was a story of two teams trying but not really getting there," said goalkeeper David Ousted. "Both teams really wanted to go for it, but the ability just wasn't there.

"It's always nice to get a clean sheet, especially away from home. But it's finding the balance of doing well both defensively and offensively in the same game. We're still looking for that."
