Glory's A-League injury woes hit a new low

Dec 9, 2017 - 4:31 PM Perth Glory's injury crisis has reached a new low after key players Alex Grant and Xavi Torres were cut down during the 2-1 loss to Newcastle.

Grant (hamstring) and Torres (groin) limped off in the 67th minute while Glory were leading 1-0 on Saturday.

The Jets struck two goals within four minutes at the death to steal the win, leaving Perth languishing in eighth spot on the A-League table.

Glory were already dealing with a crippling injury crisis before the match.

Key players Scott Neville (groin), Adam Taggart (hamstring), and Andreu (calf) have been sidelined for several weeks, while Andy Keogh's return remains up in the air.

Marc Warren (ankle) and Joel Chianese (collarbone) also remain sidelined.

Coach Kenny Lowe initially hoped Keogh would be able to return from his groin injury against the Jets.

But a flare-up at training last Friday put those plans to bed, with the star striker now set to undergo more scans.

"He felt tight on Friday when he came off. But we've had scans, and there's nothing there," Lowe said.

"We think it's neural, nerve related. He'll have a few more scans in a different area, and maybe we can get to the cause of it.

"We just need to settle him down. Structurally and physically there's no tear there. It looks as though it's neural, maybe coming from his back.

"So we just need to make sure we can identify the problem and treat it correctly."

Lowe said he is unsure how bad the injuries to Grant and Torres are.

Glory are still equal on points with sixth-placed Brisbane, and Lowe said it wasn't a time to wallow in self pity despite all the injuries.

"You know what, you just get on with stuff. You embrace it," Lowe said.

"It's a challenge. We find out about ourselves. We'll find out a lot about me. It's going to be good.

"Somewhere down the line, the luck balances up for you."

One major positive to come out of the injury crisis has been the emergence of 16-year-old Jacob Italiano, who looks to be a star in the making.
