Liberty use big second quarter to down Sparks

Jun 26, 2011 - 10:45 PM Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Cappie Pondexter poured in 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the New York Liberty to a 77-67 win over the Los Angeles Sparks at Prudential Center.

Essence Carson finished with 18 points and Plenette Pierson added 14 points in 28 minutes for the Liberty, who evened their record at 4-4.

Candace Parker scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Tina Thompson put in 14 points for the Sparks, who have lost back-to-back games and dropped their record to 4-3.

New York was outscored 19-17 after one quarter, but took control with a 24 point second quarter to take a 41-33 lead at the half and didn't look back.

New York shot 43.1 percent from the floor while Los Angeles shot 38.7 percent.

Sloppy play doomed the Sparks, as they turned the ball over 21 times while New York finished the game with only 13 turnovers.
