Liberty hold off Mystics
Aug 17, 2011 - 1:43 AM Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Cappie Pondexter poured in a game-high 26 points as the New York Liberty held off the Washington Mystics, 69-66.Plenette Pierson added 16 points and Kia Vaughn and Essence Carson each scored eight for the Liberty, who snapped a two-game skid.
Crystan Langhorne dropped 25 points and Matee Ajavon had 12 for the Mystics, who have lost two in a row.
The Liberty led by seven to open the fourth, but the Mystics took the lead with 25.4 seconds remaining. Pondexter then hit a layup with 13.5 seconds left and Ajavon missed a three-pointer. Washington fouled Nicole Powell, who made one free throw for a 68-66 lead. Langhorne's jumper was blocked by Kara Braxton. Pierson made one free throw to account for the final margin.
