Cornish leads Stamps over Lions
Sep 28, 2014 - 12:05 PM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Jon Cornish rushed for 156 yards on 20 carries, as the Calgary Stampeders held off the British Columbia Lions, 14-7, in a low-scoring West Division showdown at McMahon Stadium.Cornish also added three receptions for 20 yards for Calgary (11-2), which continues its reign in first place. Drew Tate had a quiet outing under center in place of an injured Bo Levi Mitchell, completing 12-of-23 passes for 162 yards, and Maurice Price hauled in two passes for 66 yards.
For BC (7-6), Kevin Glenn struggled with 127 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions on 14-of-25 passing. Andrew Harris picked up 76 rushing yards on 12 attempts.
BC started the game off right with a major on the opening possession. The nine-play drive was capped off by a 2-yard touchdown run by John Beck.
Calgary cut into its deficit midway through the second quarter on a 24-yard field goal by Rene Paredes. The score would remain 7-3 in favor of the Lions heading into halftime.
BC conceded a safety early in the third quarter to give two points to Calgary, then Paredes knocked through a 35-yard field goal less than three minutes later to give the Stamps their first lead of the game, 8-7.
Paredes added a 43-yarder later in the frame and then made a 30-yarder early in the fourth quarter to give Calgary a seven-point lead, 14-7.
The Lions advanced the ball into Calgary territory on their final drive, but their hopes were dashed when Glenn was picked off by Keon Raymond.
Game Notes
Harris also collected a game-high six catches for BC, although they resulted in just 29 yards ... Juwan Simpson paced the Calgary defense with nine tackles ... The Lions were forced to punt 11 times ... The teams will meet in the season finale on Nov. 7 in British Columbia.
