Stampeders rally past Argonauts

Sep 14, 2014 - 2:39 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Drew Tate threw a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter as the Calgary Stampeders erased a 19-point halftime deficit to secure a 40-33 victory over the Toronto Argonauts at McMahon Stadium.

Tate came in for starting quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, who left the game in the fourth quarter with an injury to his left leg. Tate threw for 74 yards and was a perfect 6-of-6 on his pass attempts for Calgary (10-1). Mitchell had thrown for 128 yards, two scores and an interception on 19-of-29 passing to start the game. Jon Cornish tallied 174 yards and a touchdown on only 11 carries and also had 35 yards and a touchdown through the air.

Ricky Ray tallied 338 yards and four touchdowns, as well as an interception, on 33-of-38 passing for Toronto (3-8). Jason Barnes caught six of those passes for 116 yards and a touchdown.

Calgary got a 28-yard field goal from Rene Paredes early in the first quarter to open up a 3-0 lead.

However, Toronto dominated the rest of the first half thanks to four touchdown passes from Ray. The first was a 15-yard strike to Andre Durie and the second was an 11-yard toss to Trent Guy, which was followed by a single from Swayze Waters on the ensuing kickoff. Ray also added a two-yard touchdown throw to Spencer Watt and a a 27-yard heave to Barnes in the half.

Mitchell gave the Stampeders a little momentum before halftime when he threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Sederrik Cunningham with 38 seconds left in the first half.

Waters nailed a 36-yard field goal early in the third quarter to extend Toronto's lead to 32-10.

Calgary began chipping away at the Argonauts' lead with a 79-yard touchdown run from Cornish, which was followed by a successful two-point conversion.

Then deficit was cut even further by a 14-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell to Brad Sinopoli.

Waters recorded his second single of the game early in the fourth quarter.

However, that wasn't enough to keep Calgary at bay, as Tate threw a 15- yard touchdown pass to Jabari Arthur with 5:03 to play and then connected with Cornish for a successful two-point conversion.

Tate then completed the comeback when he threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Cornish with less than two minutes to play.
