Danks eyes first win since late July vs. Twins
Sep 3, 2014 - 2:58 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - John Danks will try to secure his first victory since late July on Wednesday night when his Chicago White Sox conclude a two-game series with the rival Minnesota Twins.Danks has not picked up a win since beating the Twins on July 25. He earned that victory despite giving up four runs over seven innings, moving to 7-12 with a 5.35 earned run average in 26 starts in this matchup.
The lefty has gone 0-3 in six starts since, though he did pitch well enough to win on Thursday versus Cleveland. It was not to be, though, despite Danks giving up just two runs over six innings in a 3-2 losing decision.
"He definitely pitched better and had a good changeup today," said Chicago manager Robin Ventura about Danks. "He really didn't make any big mistakes, and was able to keep us in the game."
The 29-year-old Danks is 9-9 with a 4.88 ERA on the year and his recent slump could come to a close tonight if Minnesota hurler Trevor May can't get himself on track.
May has begun his major league career by going 0-4 with a 10.42 ERA in five games (4 starts) and is coming off perhaps his worst outing of that bunch.
The right-hander hurled three scoreless innings versus Baltimore on Friday, but walked in a run in the fourth inning and then gave up a grand slam to Chris Davis. He ended up allowing eight runs on six hits and a walk in 4 2/3 innings of work to take the loss while also giving up the first two homers of his career to highlight some control issues.
"I got myself in tough situations, hitting two guys for the first time all year and then giving up a grand slam to a guy who hit 53 home runs last year," said May. "I got myself there."
May 24, has lost both of his starts at home while giving up eight runs and 18 hits over 10 innings.
His first career win would give the Twins a split of this quick set after the White Sox won 6-3 in 10 innings on Tuesday. Dayan Viciedo hit a go-ahead homer in the top of the extra frame and Tyler Flowers added a two-run shot in the inning.
Flowers finished with four RBI and Carlos Sanchez was 3-for-4 with an RBI for the White Sox, who have won three of four.
"Even though we're not where we want to be right now, there's still a level of professionalism you have to keep," Flowers said.
Kennys Vargas hit a two-run home run and Danny Santana was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for the Twins, who have lost eight of 10.
Tommy Milone pitched just 3 2/3 innings in the start, allowing three runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
"I need to get back to attacking," Milone said.
The Twins are 8-7 versus the White Sox this season.
