Dragons jump out to early lead, hold on against Brigade

May 21, 2007 - 6:40 AM UNIONDALE, New York (Ticker) -- Leading by 20 points early in the fourth quarter, the New York Dragons almost had their fire put out.

Aaron Garcia threw for nine touchdowns and receiver Kevin Swayne scored five times as the Dragons held on for a 62-56 win over the Kansas City Brigade on Sunday.

New York scored 21 points in each of the first two quarters to jump out to a 42-28 halftime lead before Garcia and Swayne connected for their final two scores in the third period.

After Garcia found Swayne for the fifth time in the end zone from eight yards out midway through the third period, the Dragons took a 55-35 lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

But New York nearly allowed Kansas City to make up the deficit over the game's final 11 minutes.

The Brigade's Raymond Philyaw threw the first of his three fourth-quarter scores to Jerel Myers to trim the deficit to 55-42. Garcia responded with the Dragons' lone score in the final stanza to Ricky Hall to push the lead back to 62-42 before Philyaw found Myers for the second time with 5:12 remaining, and Boo Williams in the final minute to narrow the New York lead to 62-56.

Philyaw threw for 411 yards and eight touchdowns and receiver Charles Frederick led Kansas City with 140 receiving yards and five scores.
