Defense, special teams lead SaberCats

Jun 26, 2007 - 1:47 AM LAS VEGAS (Ticker) -- The San Jose SaberCats used big plays from their defense and special teams to pound the Las Vegas Gladiators, 73-46, on Monday.

Clevan Thomas opened the scoring for the SaberCats (13-3) with a 30-yard return of an interception off Las Vegas quarterback Brian Jones just 2 1/2 minutes in. After Steve Watson's fumble recovery in the end zone highlighted a 24-0 second-quarter spurt, Rodney Wright opened the third quarter with a 57-yard kick return for a TD and a 38-10 lead.

Less than four minutes later, Wright returned a 56-yard kickoff for a touchdown. Later in the period, Cleann Saintfil returned a fumble 34 yards for a score with 7:10 left in the period.

San Jose quarterback Mark Grieb completed 9-of-13 passes for 119 yards and one touchdown before being relieved by Craig Whelihan, who was 7-of-12 for 65 yards and another score.

Nick Rolovich relieved Jones and completed 10-of-19 passes for 192 yards and four scores for Las Vegas (2-14).
