Calvillo piles up the milestones, Als shut down Esks

Aug 12, 2011 - 3:17 AM Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Anthony Calvillo continues to rack up milestones.

The Montreal Alouettes quarterback threw two touchdown passes, reaching 400 for his career, and also reached the 70,000-yard passing mark Thursday night in a 27-4 victory over Edmonton.

Calvillo, who already became the CFL's all-time leader in pass completions and touchdown passes this season, completed 19 of his 33 tries for 261 yards as the Alouettes (5-2) won their second straight game with a dominating performance on both sides of the ball.

The Eskimos (5-2) hardly had an answer in their second straight loss.

Playing for the first time since leading receiver Fred Stamps had abdominal surgery, sidelining him for up to six weeks, they rushed for negative-one yard. Ricky Ray completed 21-of-32 passes for 245 yards while Damon Duval was 1-for-2 on field goal attempts.

The Alouettes sacked Ray six times.

"Ray was under tremendous pressure because our offensive line was not in synch. We're not playing at the level we should be playing to keep our quarterback upright and have things go well like we need to," said Edmonton head coach Kavis Reed.

"I was particularly disappointed with our first half because we didn't protect our quarterback like we did in the first five games. But we'll get it straight."

Calvillo, 38, gave Montreal fans a bit of a scare midway through the third quarter when Edmonton lineman Marcus Howard wrapped him up for an awkward tackle that bent the quarterback's right leg awkwardly underneath him.

But Calvillo got up almost immediately, limped a little, then continued right along.

Montreal kicker Sean Whyte was 4-for-4 on field goal attempts and has made 19 straight. Jamel Richardson had seven catches for 110 yards and caught both of Calvillo's touchdown passes, while Brandon Whitaker rushed 12 times for 73 yards.

"We know that we are capable of playing well. Offensively, we had too many field goals. We really could have put this team away," said Calvillo.

"But our defense was amazing. It's really amazing how they played tonight. Our defense shut them down. It was impressive to see how they could play against an excellent team like Edmonton with a quarterback like Ricky Ray."

Calvillo entered the game with 398 career touchdown passes and hit Richardson for a 14-yard score in the first quarter to cap a 52-yard drive for the game's first points.

Whyte's 12-yard field goal later in the period made it 10-0 and he kicked a 25-yarder early in the second to give the Alouettes a 13-0 lead.

Calvillo and Richardson connected on a 28-yard post route later in the second quarter for Calvillo's 400th career touchdown pass, making it 20-3. The 75- yard drive was keyed by Whitaker runs of 27 and seven yards and his 13-yard catch.

Earlier in the quarter, Edmonton got on the board with Duval's 39-yard field goal. The only other Eskimo point came on Duval's single in the third quarter.

Whyte kicked a 30-yard field goal later in the third and added a 47-yarder in the fourth. He also had a single in the fourth.

Calvillo now has 70,256 career passing yards. Damon Allen is the all-time CFL leader with 72,381 yards.

Game Notes

Duval missed a 46-yard field goal in the third quarter...Edmonton still owns a 37-24-2 advantage in the all-time regular season series against Montreal, but the Alouettes have won four of the last five meetings...Jason Barnes led the Eskimos with six catches for 128 yards.
