Stampeders rally to beat Roughriders in OT

Jul 20, 2012 - 6:09 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Kevin Glenn hit Nik Lewis for a 16-yard touchdown strike in overtime, capping an improbable comeback in the Calgary Stampeders' 41-38 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Glenn threw for 385 yards and four touchdowns for the Stampeders (2-2), who scored 17 straight points late in regulation to force overtime.

Lewis finished with seven receptions for 98 yards and three scores.

Darian Durant completed 19-of-37 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns for the Roughriders (3-1), who entered Thursday as the last unbeaten team in the CFL.

Saskatchewan appeared to be in control early in the fourth when Kory Sheets leapt across the goal line for a one-yard score and a 35-18 lead, but Calgary fought back.

Glenn, starting in place of the injured Drew Tate, hit Lewis for a 21-yard touchdown before Malik Jackson intercepted Durant with just under four minutes to play.

It was Durant's first interception of the season, and Glenn capitalized, finding Larry Taylor for a quick 20-yard strike, which cut the deficit to 35-32.

The Stampeders then forced a punt, regaining possession with less than two minutes remaining. Glenn and third-string quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell teamed up on the game-tying, 87-yard scoring drive, which resulted in Rene Paredes' 17-yard field goal with 29 seconds to play.

Saskatchewan settled for a 50-yard field goal from Christopher Milo on the first possession of overtime and Glenn sealed the victory, throwing across the field to Lewis, who scampered into the corner of the end zone with the decisive score.

Earlier, Calgary grabbed a 15-14 lead in the second quarter on a safety, but Durant responded with a 30-yard touchdown strike to Chris Getzlaf shortly before halftime, giving the Roughriders a lead which continued to grow.

Saskatchewan carried the momentum into the third quarter, which began with Tristan Jackson's kickoff return to the Calgary 41-yard line. Durant capitalized with a six-play drive, capping it with a 20-yard touchdown strike to Weston Dressler for a 28-15 advantage.

Paredes hit a 44-yard field goal with less than a minute left in the third quarter and also opened the scoring with a 46-yard boot during the back-and- forth first half.

Sheets answered that first-quarter kick with a two-yard touchdown plunge, which was set up by Jock Sanders' 28-yard scamper up the sideline.

Calgary took a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter with a quick 62-yard drive. Glenn hit Johnny Forzani for a long completion on the march before finding Lewis with consecutive passes -- the second of which Lewis brought down in the back of the end zone.

Sheets reeled off a 48-yard run on the Roughriders' next possession and Neal Hughes followed with a short touchdown grab for a 14-10 edge.

Paredes tacked on a 37-yard field goal later in the second quarter.
