Eskimos score 24 unanswered, beat Blue Bombers in OT

Sep 21, 2013 - 3:47 AM Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - Hugh Charles' 9-yard touchdown run in overtime lifted the Edmonton Eskimos to a 35-27 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in a battle of the CFL's two worst clubs on Friday.

The Eskimos (3-9) trailed 27-11 early in the third quarter, but scored the next 24 points of the game for the win.

Hugh O'Niell buried a pair of field goals from 35 and 46 yards, respectively, before Kerry Joseph bulled his way in from one yard out to make it a three- point game.

Edmonton took over on its own 29-yard line with 1:15 left to play. After a pair of incomplete passes, Mike Reilly connected with Fred Stamps on a 51- yard catch and run down into Blue Bombers territory.

Reilly then found Shamawd Chambers for a 30-yard gain down the right sideline to get down to the Winnipeg 10. After throwing a pass out of the back of the end zone, Reilly found Chambers wide open in the back left corner, but Chambers dropped the easy go-ahead score. The Eskimos were forced to settle for O'Neill's game-tying 17-yard field goal.

The Eskimos took over in overtime and Charles ripped off a 16-yard rush and a facemask penalty got the ball on the Bombers' 9-yard line. Charles scampered in on the next play, and Chambers caught the two-point conversion.

Edmonton sacked Justin Goltz and forced two incomplete passes to seal the win.

Reilly completed 31-of-46 passes for 418 yards and a touchdown and Charles carried the ball 11 times for 81 yards and a score. Stamps caught eight passes for 157 yards for the Eskimos, winners in two straight.

Max Hall was 18-for-27 passing for 253 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions before leaving with an apparent head injury in the fourth quarter.

Goltz replaced Hall and was 0-for-2 passing.

Winnipeg (2-10) has dropped two straight and nine of its last 10 overall.

Winnipeg scored on the games' opening drive and Jason Boltus bulled his way into the end zone from one yard out.

Two series later, Hall's 12-yard touchdown strike to Terrence Edwards made it 14-0.

Sandro DeAngelis nailed a pair of field goals early in the second quarter to give Winnipeg what looked to be a comfortable 20-0 lead.

O'Neill's 21-yarder with just under seven minutes left in the first half got Edmonton on the board.

O'Niell missed a 31-yarder on the Eskimos' ensuing drive, but Edmonton came away with a single to make it a two-possession game.

Edmonton continued its comeback as Reilly connected with Adarius Bowman with 23 seconds left in the half to send the Eskimos into the locker room trailing 20-11.

Jovon Johnson recovered a Stamps fumble and returned it 48 yards in the opening minute of the third, but Edmonton scored the next 13 points to pull within 27-24.
