Hurricanes fall one run short of Scorchers

Jan 10, 2016 - 10:10 AM It all came down to the last ball but in the end Perth Scorchers emerged victors by just one run against Hobart Hurricanes.

The thrilling close to Sunday's clash at Bellerive Oval in front of a sold-out crowd hands the WA franchise a guaranteed Big Bash League finals berth and strong chance to host a semi as they eye a third successive BBL title.

After sitting on the sideline for the past three matches, it was British import Michael Carberry (62) who top scored and helped the visitors to 5-173.

With Shaun Marsh and Joel Paris entering the Australian one-day camp, Carberry was recalled and needed to impress.

"I had some big shoes to fill coming back into the team so there was a little bit of pressure there but I guess the value of experience: get yourself in and then anything's possible," he told reporters after play.

Carberry's demise came at the hand of Shaun Tait (2-29), who often reached speeds in excess of 150km/h on Sunday.

On his return from Test duties, Scorchers skipper Adam Voges (2) was unable to add much to his team's total.

In reply Hurricanes captain Tim Paine posted an admirable 57 before being bowled by Ashton Agar (2-38).

Hobart's top order offered little support with opener Ben Dunk (9) and No.3 Kumar Sangakkara (6) both dismissed cheaply.

As the hosts' chances started to slip away, some big hitting from Dan Christian (26), Jon Wells (20) and Darren Sammy (28 not out) kept them in the match.

Hurricanes needed 48 from the last four overs and then six from the last two balls.

Sammy managed a boundary off the last delivery, which took his side to 6-172.

It left the West Indies cricketer upset that he wasn't able to bring home the win.

"I guess that wasn't my best," a glum Sammy said after play.

"Close was not good enough, we had to win, and unfortunately we didn't do that so it's kind of bitter right now in the dressing room."

The result is a blow to the Hurricanes' finals hopes and they'll need to beat ladder-leaders Adelaide Strikers on Wednesday to have any chance of a top-four finish.
