Yankees sweep ChiSox, tie Red Sox for first

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Robinson Cano and Russell Martin homered, and Ivan Nova pitched 7 2/3 solid innings, as the Yankees defeated the White Sox, 7-2, to complete a rare four-game sweep in Chicago.

Martin drove in four runs for the Yankees, who swept the White Sox in four games in Chicago for the first time since turning the trick from June 17-20, 1976 at Comiskey Park.

Jorge Posada and Curtis Granderson each drove in a run for New York, which was coming off an 18-7 victory on Wednesday.

Nova (10-4) gave up one run on six hits for New York, which has won seven in a row and 10 of 12 overall. He struck out a career-high 10 batters to go along with zero walks.

"That might be as good as we've seen him all year," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He was excellent tonight. I thought his slider made a huge difference for him, the strikeouts that he had, the outs that he got. I thought the command on his fastball was really good."

The Yankees are now tied with the Red Sox atop the AL East with a three-game set between the two slated for this weekend in Boston.

Juan Pierre drove in a run and Adam Dunn homered for the White Sox, who suffered their first four-game sweep at home since August 23-26, 2007.

Philip Humber (8-8) allowed four runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings to suffer his four straight loss for Chicago, which dropped its sixth straight to end a 10-game homestand at 3-7.

"You definitely hate to lose a series, much less get swept," Humber said. "You gotta give those guys a lot of credit. They played the game better than we did."

The first six batters of the game grounded out, and Mark Teixeira struck out swinging to start the second. Cano then hit a homer to left for a 1-0 New York lead.

Nova retired the first seven batters he faced. Alejandro De Aza broke the streak with a one-out infield single in the third. De Aza stole second, moved to third on Brent Morel's single and scored on Pierre's sacrifice fly.

The Yankees took the lead back in the sixth. Brett Gardner led off with a double to right and moved to third on Derek Jeter's sacrifice bunt. Granderson hit a grounder to first baseman Dunn, who stepped on first before throwing home. Gardner beat the throw with a nice slide to make it 2-1.

New York tacked on two more runs in the seventh. Cano singled and Nick Swisher walked to begin the frame. Two batters later, Posada hit an RBI single to right. Jesse Crain took over for Humber and Martin greeted him with a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 margin.

Martin hit a three-run homer off Brian Bruney in the ninth.

Dunn's homer off Hector Noesi in the home ninth accounted for the final score.

The Yankees took six of eight games from the White Sox this season...Nova's last loss was June 3...Humber's last win was July 2...New York recorded its seventh sweep of the season and fourth of three-or-more games...White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko returned to the lineup Thursday after missing thee games with a bruised left knee/calf. He went 2-for-3 as the designated hitter.
