Rolling Yankees seek sweep of White Sox

Aug 4, 2011 - 2:45 PM (Sports Network) - The New York Yankees go after a seventh straight win this evening when they try to complete a four-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

The Yankees' offense continued to pound Chicago pitching on Wednesday, as they put together their best offensive game of the season Wednesday night, recording 23 hits in an 18-7 rout of the White Sox.

Derek Jeter led the offensive assault with a 5-for-6 performance at the plate. He scored four times and drove in two runs for the Yankees, who remained one game back of the Boston Red Sox for first place in the American League East with a three-game set between the two slated for this weekend.

The Yankees haven't swept the White Sox in four games in Chicago since turning the trick from June 17-20, 1976 at Comiskey Park.

Curtis Granderson went 4-for-6 with five RBI and two runs scored for New York. Robinson Cano hit a three-run homer and knocked in four runs, while Eric Chavez hit a two-run homer and drove in four.

Every New York starter had at least one hit and a run scored.

"It seemed like all the guys were having good at-bats and hitting balls hard," Jeter said.

Yankees starter A.J. Burnett was in line for the win but couldn't get out of the fifth inning. He gave up seven runs on 13 hits over 4 1/3 frames. Cory Wade (2-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to pick up the victory.

Carlos Quentin hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs for the White Sox, who have dropped five in a row.

Chicago also had a solid offensive night, with every starter picking up a hit. The home team ended with 14 hits.

Gavin Floyd (9-10) lasted just 2 1/3 innings in the worst outing of his career, giving up 10 runs on nine hits.

Tonight, the Yankees turn to righty Ivan Nova, who is 9-4 with a 4.01 ERA. Nova returned from a stint in the minors to beat the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday, holding them to a pair of runs and six hits in seven innings.

Nova did not get a decision against the Pale Hose earlier in the year, but is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in two starts against them.

Chicago, meanwhile, will hand the ball to righty Philip Humber, who has lost his last three starts. Humber's most recent setback came against the Red Sox on Saturday, as he surrendered four runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings, dropping him to 8-7 to go along with a 3.44 ERA.

Humber nearly no-hit the Yanks earlier in the year in his only other appearance against them, limiting them to a hit over seven scoreless innings.

These teams split a four-game set in the Bronx earlier in the year. Chicago was outscored 17-9 in that series, but out-hit the Yankees, 31-26.
