Marlins shut out scuffling Phillies
Jul 3, 2014 - 4:48 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Tom Koehler and three relievers combined to throw a five-hit shutout, leading the Miami Marlins to a 5-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night.Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run homer for the Marlins, who opened the three-game series with a 5-4 win in 11 innings on Tuesday.
Koehler (6-6) picked up his first win in five starts after giving up just three hits and a walk in six innings and striking out seven in this one.
He went on the paternity list after the game to be with his wife as they await the birth of their first child.
"We're excited about that," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond, "and that he got a big win on a big day."
Mike Dunn, Kevin Gregg and Chris Hatcher finished the game out of the bullpen.
Cole Hamels (2-5) failed to go seven innings for the first time in 11 starts and the Phillies matched a season high with their sixth straight loss. They were shut out for the 11th time in 84 games this season.
Hamels, who carried a 2.84 ERA into the game, allowed three runs on five hits and four walks in five innings.
"I wasn't really able to get command of the fastball," Hamels admitted.
Koehler retired 15 straight batters after Ben Revere and Jimmy Rollins hit consecutive singles to start the game. The next batter to reach was Tony Gwynn Jr., who drew a walk hitting for Hamels leading off the sixth inning.
The game was scoreless until Donovan Solano's bases-loaded hit in the fourth gave the Marlins a 1-0 lead.
Hamels escaped the jam with a double play but gave up two runs in the fifth on RBI doubles by Ed Lucas and Casey McGehee, who drove his hit off the left- field wall.
Marcell Ozuna singled off Mario Hollands in the eighth and Saltalamacchia drove his eighth homer over the wall in left-center to make it 5-0.
Game Notes
The Phillies were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven men on base ... The teams have split 12 games this season ... The Phillies also lost six in a row from May 31-June 5.
