Phils turn to Hamels aiming to get on track vs. Marlins
Jul 2, 2014 - 2:31 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The struggling Philadelphia Phillies hope to get back on track and will resume a three-game series against the Miami Marlins Wednesday. The Phillies have lost five in a row and nine of their last 11 games, including Tuesday's 5-4 setback in 11 innings. Ed Lucas stroked the game- winning single in the bottom of the 11th inning, scoring Jeff Baker for the decisive run.
Phillies reliever Justin De Fratus was tagged with the loss for allowing Lucas's hit and starter A.J. Burnett gave up four runs -- three earned -- in six innings of work with 10 strikeouts and four walks.
"You get good signs here and there, you really do," Burnett said. "It just seems like the games we're close to we just don't win them."
Marlon Byrd and Cody Asche hit back-to-back homers in the eighth inning to tie the game for the Phillies, who opened a 10-game road trip on a sour note and fell to 18-20 away from home.
The Phillies will also visit Pittsburgh and Milwaukee on the trip.
Taking the mound for Philadelphia Wednesday will be Cole Hamels. Hamels is 2-4 with a 2.84 ERA and 0-1 in his last four appearances. He has given up just five runs in his last five outings and did not figure into the decision of a 5-3 win over Miami last Thursday, when he allowed three runs in seven innings.
Hamels is 1-2 in six road starts and 9-12 with a 3.20 ERA in 31 career starts against the Marlins.
Miami ended a four-game losing streak last night thanks to Lucas's clutch hit in the 11th inning.
"It was nice to be able to finish one off," said Lucas. "It was good to be able to dump one in there and get us out of here for once."
Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove in two runs and Giancarlo Stanton ended 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Marlins starter Henderson Alvarez pitched well in the no-decision and gave up two runs in seven innings. Bryan Morris threw two scoreless innings of relief for the win.
Tom Koehler draws the start for the Marlins Wednesday and he is 5-6 with a 3.70 ERA. Koehler is 0-1 in his last four appearances and 1-3 in his past four decisions. He did not factor in the outcome of a 5-3 loss at Philadelphia last Thursday and surrendered two runs in six innings.
Koehler has faced the Phillies four times (2 starts) in his career, going 0-1 with a 5.93 ERA in 13 2/3 innings. Miami has lost each of Koehler's last three trips to the mound.
The Phillies are 6-5 against the Marlins this season and split a four-game set with them last week. The Marlins are 90-84 all-time at home versus Philly.
