Giavotella helps Angels sweep Tigers

Jun 1, 2015 - 4:28 AM Anaheim, CA ( - Johnny Giavotella's two-run infield single in the bottom of the eighth lifted the Los Angeles Angels to a 4-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday night.

The Tigers opted to send David Price (4-2) out for the eighth. David Freese walked and was replaced on the basepaths by Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Chris Iannetta reached on an infield single, and both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Joba Chamberlain was called in from the bullpen to face Giavotella, whose infield single up the middle plated two runs.

"It was a great feeling coming through for the team," said Giavotella. "I was looking for a fastball and I got a slider."

Price gave up four runs on eight hits in his first loss since April 22 against the Yankees. The 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner struck out six and walked four.

"David pitched really well. An outstanding performance," said Tigers manager Brad Ausmus. "After 7 2/3 innings I thought he was done."
