Price, Tigers hope to slow down Angels
May 31, 2015 - 3:48 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - David Price will try to stifle the red-hot Los Angeles offense as the Detroit Tigers and Angels conclude a four-game set on Sunday.Albert Pujols homered for the third consecutive game and Los Angeles hit five home runs in the first two innings of Saturday's contest en route to an 8-6 win over the Tigers.
Pujols capped a big second inning with a three-run shot, while Matt Joyce and Carlos Perez belted back-to-back homers in the frame. Mike Trout and Kole Calhoun homered in the opening frame. According to STATS LLC, it was just the second time in MLB history a team has had five different players homer in the first two innings. Texas also accomplished the feat in 2005.
"We're expecting to score runs," Trout said. "The last couple of games, we've been swinging the bat well. If we stay right there, and go from there, we're gonna win ballgames."
The 35-year old Pujols is hitting .395 with 11 homers in 36 career meetings against the Tigers. The Angels will also have back Erick Aybar, who has hit safely in 18 of his last 19, before missing the last two games due to a hamstring injury.
The Angels, who have won 13 of their last 14 games versus the Tigers in Anaheim, will now try to complete their first four-game sweep of an opponent this season. However, Price will be a huge obstacle in the way of that goal.
Price has been solid all season with the exception of one poor start versus the Yankees. The 6-foot-6 southpaw extended his winning streak to three on Tuesday as he held Oakland scoreless for seven innings, allowing only five hits and one walk during that span.
"That's what makes him one of the better pitchers in the game," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "He gets the big outs when needed."
The Tigers are 9-1 in the 10 games Price has started this season. The 2012 AL Cy Young Award Winner is 4-4 with a 3.90 ERA against the Angels.
Detroit's offense performed well in the loss on Saturday. Miguel Cabrera, Yoenis Cespedes, J.D. Martinez and Jose Iglesias all registered multi-hit games. Martinez added two doubles while Ian Kinsler and Cespedes went deep. Cabrera is on a 19-game streak of reaching base safely, currently the longest in the American League.
The Angels will counter with Matt Shoemaker, who has been inconsistent this season en route to a 3-4 record with a 5.44 ERA. Shoemaker submitted seven scoreless innings against the Padres in his last outing to bounce back from a poor showing versus Toronto on May 21, during which he gave up eight runs.
The Angels went 4-3 against the Tigers last season and the two clubs will meet again at Comerica Park from August 25-27.
