Jones' single give Orioles win over White Sox
Apr 18, 2008 - 3:39 AM BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- Rookie Adam Jones hit a walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning to lead the Baltimore Orioles to a 6-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday.Jones laced a 1-0 slider from Boone Logan (1-1) down the left field line, plating Kevin Millar with the game-winning run.
Jones' single capped a four-run rally for the Orioles, who scored one in the eighth and two in the ninth. Brian Roberts had an RBI double and Melvin Mora tied the game at 5-5 with a single off White Sox closer Bobby Jenks in the ninth.
"I love RBI situations," Jones said. "I'm glad I was able to come through. It (the pitch) was right where I like it."
"We found a way to get it done tonight," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. "It takes an effort by everyone on the ball club and that's what we did tonight."
Carlos Quentin homered twice for Chicago, which had won two straight. It was the second multi-homer game of his career.
"We are going to have to put this one behind us," Quentin said. "It happens, we'll just have to go back to playing good baseball."
In the 10th, Millar and Luke Scott each drew a walk off Logan. One batter later, Jones came through with the clutch hit to cap the rally.
"When you walk the first two batters of the inning, it's tough to get out of it," Logan said. "It's unfortunate."
Baltimore closer George Sherrill (1-0) threw a scoreless ninth to pick up the win.
The Chicago bullpen wasted a superb outing by Gavin Floyd, who allowed just two unearned runs and two hits in six innings. Quentin's second home run of the game put Floyd in line for his third straight win, but Jenks blew his first save in seven chances.
"He (Floyd) got it done tonight," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "He did a tremendous job again."
It was a bittersweet outing for Floyd, who grew up an Orioles fan in Annapolis, Maryland.
"I grew up rooting for the Orioles, so it was special to pitch here," Floyd said. "It was my game and I wanted to go out there and win."
Quentin and Joe Crede hit back-to-back homers in the seventh off Orioles starter Jeremy Guthrie to give the White Sox a 4-2 lead. Quentin added another solo shot in the eighth for a 5-2 advantage.
However, Luke Scott trimmed the lead to 5-3 with an RBI double off Scott Linebrink in the bottom half of the inning, and Jenks failed to close the door in the ninth.
After Guillermo Quiroz hit a one-out single off Jenks, Roberts lined a two-out RBI double to right field to make it 5-4. Mora then singled up the middle, tying the game at 5-5.
"I was just going with the pitch, and slapped it up the middle, Mora said. "I was happy to see it make it through."
Nick Markakis hit a two-run homer off Floyd in the sixth to tie it at 2-2.
Guthrie allowed four runs - three earned - and six hits in six innings. The righthander struck out two and walked one.
