Floyd, White Sox aim for two-game sweep of Orioles
Apr 17, 2008 - 1:47 PM Chi White Sox (9-5) at Baltimore (8-7) 7:05 pm EDTBALTIMORE (Ticker) - Gavin Floyd looks to give the Chicago White Sox another strong pitching performance on Thursday in the finale of a two-game series with the Baltimore Orioles.
A former first-round pick by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2001, Floyd (2-0, 2.02 ERA) may be poised for a breakout season. The righthander won his second straight start on Saturday, carrying a no-hitter into the eighth inning of a 7-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Floyd, who was acquired in the trade that sent Freddy Garcia to Philadelphia, will try to follow up an impressive performance by Jose Contreras. Contreras allowed one run and four hits in seven innings of a 3-1 victory on Wednesday.
Jim Thome hit a three-run homer in his return from a one-game suspension for inappropriate actions during a loss to the Tigers on April 11.
Thome and the White Sox will take their swings against righthander Jeremy Guthrie, who is still looking for his first win of the season. Guthrie (0-1, 4.34) allowed two runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings of a 10-5 loss to Tampa Bay on Friday.
The Orioles are just 2-6 since their six-game winning streak.
