Reds try to get the brooms out on Brewers

Apr 3, 2011 - 3:07 PM (Sports Network) - Workhorse right-hander Bronson Arroyo takes the hill for the Cincinnati Reds today as the hosts go for a three-game sweep in their season-opening series with the Milwaukee Brewers at Great American Ball Park.

The defending National League Central Division champions made it two straight over the Brewers on Saturday, getting seven strong innings from lefty Travis Wood in a 4-2 win.

Wood (1-0) was charged with just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts to help the Reds take the second game after winning Thursday's season opener with a furious rally.

Scott Rolen hit a two-run homer while Drew Stubbs went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Erick Almonte's home run and Casey McGehee's RBI single accounted for all the offense for the Brewers. Shaun Marcum (0-1) was touched for four runs - three earned - on four hits with five walks and seven strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings.

Arroyo, a 34-year-old native of Key West, Fla., is coming off his best season as a major leaguer after going 17-10 with a 3.88 earned run average in 33 starts across 215 2/3 innings.

The 6-foot-4, 196-pounder has won double-digit games in four of his five complete seasons with the Reds since coming over from the Boston Red Sox in a trade for Wily Mo Pena.

He won 14 games in 2006, slumped to nine wins in 2007 and won 14 in both 2008 and 2009 before jumping to 17. His previous high with the Red Sox had been 14 wins in 2005.

Arroyo is 9-7 with a 3.77 ERA in 21 career appearances against Milwaukee.

For the Brewers, 34-year-old lefty Randy Wolf makes his 21st career start against the Reds.

The native Californian is 10-3 with one shutout and a solid 3.13 ERA in 129 1/3 innings, allowing 113 hits and striking out 129 batters while yielding a .235 batting average.

Wolf was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1997 and spent his initial eight seasons with the Phillies, but has been a vagabond since while putting in time with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston (twice) and San Diego before arriving in Milwaukee last season.

He won 13 games and posted a 4.17 ERA in 34 starts for the Brewers.

The Reds were 11-3 against the Brewers last season, going 7-1 against them in Cincy.
