Brewers continue set with Cubs

Apr 9, 2011 - 2:42 PM (Sports Network) - Long-time American Leaguer Matt Garza makes his second start as a member of the National League's Chicago Cubs tonight when they visit Miller Park for the middle test of a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Geovany Soto's two-run homer started a five-run fourth inning as the Cubs topped the Brewers, 7-4, in Friday's opener.

Jeff Baker added a three-run shot to cap the frame, while starter Carlos Zambrano (1-0) went six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out five.

Baker added an RBI single in the sixth to cap his 4-for-5, four-RBI effort. Marlon Byrd roped an RBI double in the ninth to highlight his 2-for-5 showing for the Cubs.

Prince Fielder finished with a solo homer and George Kottaras knocked in two in defeat for Milwaukee, while Randy Wolf (0-2) continued to struggle, as he was charged on Friday with six runs - two earned - on nine hits in six innings of work.

Garza, a 27-year-old Californian, was a first-round pick of the Minnesota Twins in 2005 and reached the majors with them in 2006, eventually going 8-13 across 26 appearances through 2007.

He was sent to Tampa Bay in a six-player deal in November 2007 and became a star on a Rays' staff that helped the team reach the World Series in 2008 and win the American League's East Division again in 2010.

Garza won 34 games in 95 starts and was 2-1 in the postseason for the Rays before heading to the NL as part of an eight-player trade on Jan. 8.

Garza, who has never faced the Brewers, allowed 12 hits and three runs in a no-decision against Pittsburgh in his initial appearance with Chicago on April 3.

Milwaukee will counter with 29-year-old lefty Chris Narveson, who tossed six scoreless innings in his 2011 debut on April 4, but nonetheless wound up with a no-decision in a 2-1 loss to Atlanta.

The Colorado. native scattered three hits and struck out five batters in that outing, building off a surprise 2010 run in which he won 12 times in 37 appearances after having recorded just two wins in his first 22 big-league games.

He's faced the Cubs three times in 64 career appearances and is 3-0 with a hold and a 3.66 earned run average in 19 2/3 innings of work.

In 230 overall innings in the majors, Narveson has limited opposing hitters to a .256 batting average.

Chicago was 9-6 against the Brewers last season.
