Brewers send Gallardo to hill in finale with Cubs

Apr 10, 2011 - 3:11 PM (Sports Network) - Right-hander Yovani Gallardo aims for a third consecutive superb start to kick off the 2011 season today when the Milwaukee Brewers host the Chicago Cubs in the finale of their three-game series at Miller Park.

Gallardo made his season debut on March 31 in Cincinnati and scattered seven hits over six innings while allowing two runs and getting a no-decision in a game the Brewers lost, 7-6, on a walkoff home run in the ninth.

He returned on April 5 against Atlanta and was rewarded with a win after tossing nine full innings of scoreless two-hit ball in a 1-0 defeat of the Braves.

It's been a fitting follow-up thus far to Gallardo's best season in the majors, which came last year when the 25-year-old hurler was 14-7 in 31 starts while compiling a 3.87 earned run average across 185 innings.

He's 3-1 with a 3.19 ERA in seven career starts against the Cubs, striking out 49 batters in 42 1/3 innings.

The Brewers evened the series Saturday with a strong outing from Chris Narveson, who threw seven scoreless innings to go with Prince Fielder's three doubles and four runs batted in for a 6-0 triumph.

Narveson (1-0) allowed all six of the Cubs' hits while striking out nine batters and only issuing one walk for Milwaukee, which has won four of five.

Ryan Braun finished 2-for-4 with an RBI double and scored three runs and Nyjer Morgan went 1-for-3 and worked a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning to account for the final run.

Chicago's Matt Garza (0-1) was tagged for five runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and issued three walks.

The Cubs turn to 23-year-old righty Casey Coleman, who'll make his 2011 debut after appearing in 12 games last season in his initial taste of the major leagues.

The Fort Myers, Fla. native made eight starts in the late-season call-up and was 4-2 overall with a 4.11 ERA in 57 innings.

He allowed 56 hits, walked 25 batters and struck out 27.

Two of the 12 appearances - including one start - came against the Brewers, yielding an 0-1 mark for Coleman with a 7.56 ERA in 8 1/3 innings, in which he allowed 13 hits and seven runs.

Chicago was 9-6 against the Brewers last season.
