Buehrle tries to pitch White Sox to series win in Bronx

Apr 27, 2011 - 2:43 PM (Sports Network) - White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle has come up empty on four straight attempts at career win No. 150. If he wants to reach the milestone tonight, he'll have to beat the Yankees for the first time in over seven years.

The veteran left-hander takes the mound Wednesday night in the third contest of a four-game set looking to pitch Chicago to its first series victory over the Yankees in the Bronx since 2005.

Buehrle is winless since April 1, posting back-to-back losses following a pair of no-decisions. His latest outing came on Friday in Detroit, where he was touched for six runs over 5 2/3 innings of work, falling to 1-2 with a 5.40 earned run average this season.

"They were hitting good pitches," Buehrle told Chicago's official website of his first four innings. "In those last two innings, I fell behind in the count. It's a frustrating game when stuff like that happens."

The 31-year-old has been frustrated by the Yankees his whole career. Buehrle is just 1-7 with a 6.68 ERA in 11 career starts versus the Bronx Bombers, losing five straight decisions to them since his lone win on April 10, 2004.

Mark Teixeira (.341), Derek Jeter (.371) and Robinson Cano (.455) are all hitting above .300 against Buehrle, combining for three homers and 14 RBI. Alex Rodriguez has been less successful when facing the southpaw, hitting .233 (7-for-30) without a home run.

Chicago came into this series having lost five of six at new Yankee Stadium since it opened prior to the 2009 season and eight of the previous 10 meetings overall, but has taken the first two contests of this set.

After posting a shutout victory in Monday's opener, the White Sox got a two- run homer from Paul Konerko in the eighth inning and two game-saving catches by Brent Lillibridge in the ninth to slip past the Yankees, 3-2, on Tuesday.

Lillibridge's heroics kept Gavin Floyd a winner. The starter gave up two runs on four hits over eight-plus innings, striking out 10.

"I was beyond excited," said Lillibridge, who came in as a pinch runner in the eighth and scored on Konerko's homer. "Gavin pitched great and he got the win because of what I did."

Chicago won for just the third time in its past 13 games, scoring more than four runs in just one of those contests, and improved to 3-6 on an 11-game road trip.

Cano and Brett Gardner hit solo homers in the setback, New York's third in eight games. Cano was also victimized by Lillibridge's diving catch to end the game with the tying run on second base, two pitches after the Chicago outfielder crashed into the wall to rob Rodriguez.

"We always feel like we can do better," said Rodriguez. "We're never satisfied as an offense, but we ran into a wall a little bit these last two days."

The Yankees hope that Bartolo Colon can tap into the Fountain of Youth again this evening when he makes his second start in place of the injured Phil Hughes

Making his first start last Wednesday since July 24, 2009 while with the White Sox, Colon picked up a victory at Toronto with 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball. The former Cy Young Award winner also struck out seven to pick up his first victory since May 26, 2009 after not pitching in the majors at all last season.

The 37-year-old righty, who made three relief appearances before his start, is 9-6 with a 4.15 ERA in 19 career starts when facing his former club. Colon won 15 games with Chicago in 2003 and also went 3-6 with a 4.19 ERA in 12 starts with them in '09.

Konerko is hitting .293 (12-for-41) in his career off Colon with five doubles, two homers and six RBI.
