Rays edge Angels in extras

Apr 30, 2011 - 11:47 PM St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Matt Joyce scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th, as Tampa Bay clipped Los Angeles, 2-1, in the middle test of a three-game series from Tropicana Field.

Joyce led off the frame with a double against Fernando Rodney (0-1), then took third on a Casey Kotchman grounder before scoring on an errant offering with Felipe Lopez at bat.

"I think Hank (Conger) did all he could on that pitch," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "That would have been an incredible stop if he did."

Joyce's fifth-inning homer accounted for the only other offense for the Rays, who have won six of their last seven. Joel Peralta (1-0) retired the side in order in the top of the 10th.

Howie Kendrick knocked in the run for the Angels, who won the opener 8-5 on Friday.

Both starters -- LA's Joel Pineiro and Tampa's James Shields -- dueled to a scoreless tie through 4 1/2 frames, then Joyce led off the Tampa fifth with a homer to right.

"All you try to do up there is hit line drives, use the whole field," Joyce said. "If the hits are falling, you don't have anything to worry about -- the home runs will come. Sometimes the hits come in bunches."

The Rays left men on the corners when Kelly Shoppach fanned and Lopez was called out trying to steal second on batter's interference.

Shields was finally lifted when Torii Hunter led off the ninth with a double. Hunter eventually scored against Kyle Farnsworth on a Kendrick groundout. Erick Aybar singled and went to third when Farnsworth rushed his throw on a pickoff, but Hank Conger flied out to end the inning.

The Rays stranded a runner at second in the home ninth.

Game Notes

Shields allowed six hits and one run with 12 strikeouts in eight-plus innings, while Pineiro made his season debut by giving up up four hits and a run over seven frames...Tampa became the first team in MLB history to lose its first six games and still post a winning record in April (15-12)...The Rays also posted the best April in baseball lore after going 1-8 to begin the year...Coming in, the Halos had won five of their last six games at Tampa...LA starters now have 21 quality starts in 27 games this season.
