A's hand Anderson ball vs. Tribe at the Coliseum

May 5, 2011 - 2:38 PM (Sports Network) - Brett Anderson tries to bounce back from his worst start of the season this afternoon when the Oakland Athletics play the rubber match of their three-game series with the Cleveland Indians at the Coliseum.

After allowing just one earned run in back-to-back wins Anderson was roughed up by the Texas Rangers for seven runs and nine hits in five innings to drop him to 2-2 on the year, while raising his earned run average to 2.95.

"It was probably the worst stuff I've ever had dating back to high school," Anderson said. "Just terrible. It's almost embarrassing and comical."

Anderson has faced the Indians twice and is 1-0 against them, allowing just one run in 12 innings of those outings.

The road continued to be unfriendly to the Tribe, as David DeJesus clubbed two home runs to propel Oakland to a 3-1 win. Cliff Pennington and Coco Crisp got the only other hits for the Athletics, who have won five of their last seven contests.

Trevor Cahill (5-0) surrendered just one run on five hits and struck out five.

"It was a fortunate day where I came up big," Cahill said. "The bullpen came in and was solid and we got some good hits. It was really a team win."

Josh Tomlin (4-1) was charged with the hard-luck loss for the Indians, despite allowing just three runs -- two earned -- on three hits with no walks and five strike outs.

Travis Hafner drove in the lone run for Cleveland, which had an overall seven- game win streak stopped, but lost for the seventh time in its last 10 games away from home.

"Good teams battle," Tomlin said. "That's what we have to do and we did that tonight. We'll come back. We'll battle back."

Heading to the hill for the Indians this afternoon will be right-hander Jeanmar Gomez, who is starting in place of the injured Carlos Carrasco and is 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA. Gomez did not get a decision on Friday against the Tigers, as he allowed three runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 frames of his team's 9-5 win.

"He's battled for us and given us an opportunity," Tribe skipper Manny Acta said. "He competed well for us last year. He's only had two outings here, so we're going to have to see more. If everything works out, [Carrasco] could be in line to pitch the very next week for us."

This will be his first-ever appearance against the A's.

Oakland is 12-6 against Cleveland since the start of the 2009 season.
