Giants attempt to sweep Rockies out of San Francisco

May 8, 2011 - 2:53 PM (Sports Network) - A pair of walk-off victories have the Giants a game over .500 for the first time in two weeks. Another victory this afternoon and they'll be within a game of the first-place Rockies in the National League West.

San Francisco aims for a sweep of its three-game series with Colorado this afternoon at AT&T Park.

After claiming a 4-3 victory on Friday thanks to Freddy Sanchez' run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth inning, it was Mike Fontenot's sacrifice fly that brought him Aaron Rowand for the winning run once again in the bottom of the ninth for a 3-2 triumph Saturday. The victory was San Francisco's fourth in five games and has it two games back of Colorado in the division.

The defending World Series champions have also flexed their muscle this year versus the Rockies, winning four of the five meetings so far and eight of the past 10 dating back to last year. San Francisco can record its first three- game sweep of Colorado today since Aug. 28-30, 2009 at AT&T Park.

Sanchez ended with three hits and an RBI, Buster Posey drove in a run and starter Madison Bumgarner gave up just two runs -- one earned -- in a tough- luck no-decision that kept him winless on the season at 0-5.

"I'm not missing over the middle as much and I'm making my pitches," said Bumgarner. "But I think I was just having a bit of bad luck there and they were capitalizing on my mistakes."

Todd Helton hit a two-run single for the Rockies, who have lost three straight games in the final at-bat. Clay Mortensen had a solid start in replacing the injured Esmil Rogers as he gave up just two runs -- one earned -- over six innings.

"We're in first place, but when the tide turns for us offensively, things are going to get better," said Colorado manager Jim Tracy. "But, unfortunately right now they're not and it's showing in the losses."

At 4-0 with a 2.92 earned run average through six starts, Jorge De La Rosa will attempt to keep his undefeated record in tact and prevent the sweep when he faces the Giants for the second time this season. He bested the club on April 20 with seven innings of two-run ball, striking out six.

Posey drove in both runs off the left-hander, but Pat Burrell, Aubrey Huff, Cody Ross and Miguel Tejada combined to go 0-for-12 with three strikeouts against De La Rosa, who is 7-1 with a 2.77 ERA in his career versus San Francisco.

That victory was part of a three-start winning streak that ended in Arizona on Tuesday when De La Rosa did not factor into the decision of 4-3 loss. The 30- year-old yielded three runs on seven hits, including his second homer allowed in 37 total innings, and also struck out six to give him 35 on the season.

After beginning the season in the bullpen, Ryan Vogelsong will make his third consecutive start for the Giants this afternoon.

After beating the Pirates on April 28 with 5 2/3 innings of two-run ball, the 33-year-old righty struggled in a no-decision against the Mets on Tuesday. Vogelsong was hammered for five runs on five hits, four walks and two homers over just four innings.

Vogelsong, who is 1-0 with a 4.40 ERA in four games (two starts), will make his first career start versus the Rockies, who he faced in relief on April 18. He allowed just one hit over 1 1/3 innings and he has a 4.15 ERA in five career relief outings against them.
