Perfect Garcia takes the mound for Cards against Royals
May 22, 2011 - 2:43 PMVideo
Garcia has pitched incredibly in his last three appearances, giving up a total of one earned run in 24 innings. He's 2-0 in that time and today a sixth win would tie him for the lead in the National League.
The left-hander made a start June 27 of last year at Kauffman Stadium. He got the loss, allowing five runs in just two-plus innings.
Sean O'Sullivan is scheduled to take the mound today for the Royals. The right hander is 1-1 over his last two appearances, but has surrendered a total of 14 hits and 10 runs in that time, a span of 11 2/3 innings.
The 23-year old righty is now 2-2 with a 3.93 ERA in his six starts in 2011 and 4-2 with a 3.13 ERA over his last nine starts dating to September 23, 2010. The Royals have posted a 6-3 record over those nine starts. This will be his first outing versus St. Louis.
Yesterday, Jake Westbrook tossed eight scoreless innings and Matt Holliday hit a two-run homer as St. Louis earned a 3-0 win. Westbrook (4-3) allowed four hits and three walks while fanning three, and Fernando Salas tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up his sixth save.
Ryan Theriot knocked in the other run for the Cardinals, who rebounded from a 3-0 loss in Friday's series opener.
"What good is frustration going to do? We're doing the best we can," Holliday said of his club's 16 consecutive scoreless innings before Saturday's late surge. "Sometimes it doesn't work out. They run some good pitching out there. It's not going to do any good to get frustrated."
Tim Collins (2-2) took the loss, charged with the go-ahead run for the Royals, who saw their two-game win streak ended.
Nathan Adcock's first major-league start lasted five scoreless frames, where he limited St. Louis to three hits and fanned four.
The Royals are trying for their second straight series win in this in-state showdown. These same teams will meet June 17-19 at Busch Stadium.
