Anderson tries to shut down the Yankees

May 31, 2011 - 3:00 PM (Sports Network) - Brett Anderson tries to follow up a brilliant effort his last time out when the Oakland Athletics continue their three-game series with the New York Yankees

Following a five start winless stretch that saw Anderson go 0-3, the left- hander was magnificent against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Thursday, scattering three hits over eight scoreless innings to run his record to 3-4 on the year, while lowering his earned run average to 2.84.

Anderson hasn't fared well against the Yankees over the course of his career, though, going 0-3 with a 4.68 ERA in four starts.

Oakland as a team hasn't had much luck against the Yankees lately and that was certainly the case in Monday's opener, as Bartolo Colon tossed his first complete game since 2006, helping New York beat the A's for the eighth straight time, 5-0.

Colon (3-3) allowed just four hits while fanning six without walking a batter to earn his first win since April 27. It was also the first time the burly Dominican right-hander completed a start since throwing a four-hit shutout at Seattle for the Angels on July 5, 2006.

"The stamina is fine. One of the big things about Bartolo is that he never throws a lot of pitches," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi of his starter. "He rarely throws 100 pitches in five innings. He might do that in a whole game. His games are pretty economical and it doesn't take a lot out of him."

Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer for the Yankees, who were coming off a series loss at Seattle over the weekend. Teixeira has now homered in seven of his last 11 games and is hitting .261, with 16 RBI and nine runs scored in that stretch. Also, 11 of his 16 homers have come with men on base.

The Yankees have dominated their matchup with the A's of late, winning nine of the 10 meetings last season and posting a 22-4 mark against them since the start of the 2008 campaign. New York has also won in 10 of its last 13 visits to Oakland.

Josh Willingham and Cliff Pennington doubled for the Athletics, whose four- game win streak came to an end.

Trevor Cahill (6-3) worked 6 2/3 innings in defeat, charged with four runs and four hits with five walks.

Tonight, New York will hand the ball to Freddy Garcia, who was terrific in beating the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday. Garcia won for only the second time in his last seven starts in that one, as he allowed three runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings, upping his record to 3-4 on the year to go along with a 3.26 ERA.

Garcia has faced the A's 21 times and is 6-7 against them with a 5.30 ERA.
