Granderson, Yankees crush A's

Jun 1, 2011 - 7:29 AM Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Curtis Granderson hit a two-run home run as part of a three-hit, four-RBI game, as New York pounded Oakland, 10-3, in the second of three games at the Coliseum, winning its ninth straight over the A's dating back to last season.

Derek Jeter had two hits and scored three times, Alex Rodriguez finished with three hits and three RBI and Robinson Cano clubbed a two-run homer. Freddy Garcia (4-4) was the benefactor of the offensive exhibition, giving up three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks over seven frames for the Yankees, who have reeled off three straight wins.

"We have a good lineup," New York manager Joe Girardi said. "We have a deep lineup and we have patient hitters that know how to work the count and foul pitches off. When guys make some mistakes, they get to them."

David DeJesus homered and drove in all three runs for Oakland, which has dropped two in a row after a four-game winning streak. Brett Anderson (3-5) had by far his worst outing of the season, allowing 10 runs on 11 hits and three walks over 5 1/3 frames.

The Yankees wasted little time with a pair of runs in the first. Jeter singled to center and walked the rest of the way home on Granderson's 17th home run of the season. They added a run of the unearned variety in the third, as Jeter reached second on a Mark Ellis throwing error and scored on Rodriguez's two- out single.

Oakland answered with its first score of the game in the home half, as Andy LaRoche tripled right after Kevin Kouzmanoff was thrown out at second base trying to stretch a single into a double. DeJesus' two-out single to right scored LaRoche for a 3-1 game.

New York's offense took over from there. Granderson's two-out, two-run single in the fourth made the score 5-1 and Cano's two-run home run on a hanging breaking ball opened a 7-1 cushion in the fifth. The A's got those two runs back in the bottom of the frame on DeJesus' two-run home run that just cleared the out-of-town scoreboard in right-center field.

The offensive onslaught continued in the sixth again thanks to the Yankees' top of the order. Jeter walked and Granderson singled before the duo orchestrated a double steal. Mark Teixeira was intentionally walked to put a force out at each base, filling them for Rodriguez, who came through with a two-run single into center field. New York then converted a swipe of home plate as Rodriguez took off for second, allowing Teixeira to take the plate to complete the scoring.

"What you try to do is stay aggressive and make them hit the ball," A's manager Bob Geren said. "That's what Brett did. Don't fall behind and walk guys. He was aggressive from the first pitch of the game."

Game Notes

Granderson now has 41 runs batted in on the season, while Cano has 37 and Rodriguez 30...DeJesus clubbed his fifth home run of the season...Anderson's earned run average skyrocketed from 2.84 to 3.68.
