Brewers, Marlins close set from Sun Life Stadium

Jun 6, 2011 - 2:29 PM (Sports Network) - It hasn't been easy, but the Milwaukee Brewers are just a Zack Greinke victory away from sweeping a four-game series from the Florida Marlins for the first time in over 13 years.

Having captured the first three games of this series by just a single run, the Brewers hope to have an easier time of it tonight and send the Marlins to a season-worst fifth straight setback in this finale at Sun Life Stadium.

Milwaukee has claimed consecutive victories of 6-5, 3-2 and 6-5 in this tight series, taking Sunday's meeting in 11 innings after blowing an early five-run lead.

Josh Wilson played the hero yesterday, belting a solo homer in the 11th inning.

"You live for those situations late in the game, having a chance to win a game or just contribute and help the team," Wilson said.

Closer John Axford put two runners on in the bottom of the 11th, but held on for his 16th save of the season Rickie Weeks hit his 100th career homer and drove in three for the Brewers, who moved seven games over .500 (33-26) for the first time since June 30, 2009 and sit two games back of the Cardinals for first place in the National League Central.

They are also finding some rare success in the Sunshine State. Milwaukee had lost nine of its previous 11 at Florida prior to this series. The Brewers have won four straight versus the Marlins overall.

Brett Hayes hit his first-career grand slam during a game-tying five-run sixth inning for the Marlins, losers of a season-high four straight and six of seven, but Michael Dunn gave up Wilson's homer after Florida wasted a bases- loaded opportunity in the bottom of the ninth inning.

"I made one bad pitch, fastball down the middle," Dunn said. "You've got to expect him to hit that."

Florida has lost the first three games of an 11-game homestand and go up tonight against Greinke, who has won two straight starts and four decisions in a row.

The right-hander won at Cincinnati on Tuesday, holding the Reds to a pair of runs on six hits and three walks over six innings, striking out six to improve to 4-1 with a 5.29 earned run average in six starts this season. He has struck out 45 batters and walked just six in his 34 innings.

"He kept us in the ballgame," outfielder Corey Hart said of Greinke. "He made pitches when he had to and he never backed down."

Greinke, 27, is 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA in two career games against the Marlins, including one start. That start came on May 18, 2008, a victory after he allowed three runs over six innings.

Javier Vazquez goes for the Marlins after picking up his second straight no- decision in Arizona on Wednesday. The righty allowed four runs on six hits over six innings, striking out five without a walk in his club's 6-5 setback.

Vazquez had yielded just two runs over his previous two outings and is 3-4 with a 6.02 ERA in 11 starts this season.

The 34-year-old is 6-7 with a 4.89 ERA in 16 career starts against Milwaukee.
