Cubs resume series with Brewers at Wrigley Field

Jun 15, 2011 - 3:06 PM (Sports Network) - Right-hander Carlos Zambrano and the Chicago Cubs can make it three straight wins over the National League's Central Division elite tonight, when they face the Milwaukee Brewers in the third game of a four-game set at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs have won the first two games of the series from the Brewers, who came in off a three-game sweep of St. Louis that pushed them into first place in the Central Division.

The initial loss dropped Milwaukee into a tie for the top spot with the Cardinals, a deadlock that was maintained Tuesday when St. Louis lost, 8-6, in Washington.

The pair is 2 1/2 games ahead of third-place Cincinnati, while the Cubs are fifth in the six-team loop at 10 games out.

Starlin Castro hit an RBI single in the 10th inning Tuesday to complete a 5-4 comeback victory by Chicago.

Jeff Samardzija (5-2) pitched a scoreless 10th inning for the win. Starter Randy Wells went six innings, allowing three runs - two earned - on eight hits and three walks for the Cubs, winners of two straight after a three-game losing streak.

Tim Dillard (1-1) took the loss for Milwaukee despite a strong outing by Yovani Gallardo.

Gallardo allowed one run on three hits and two walks through seven innings. He also fanned 10 for the Brewers.

Zambrano, an 11-game winner while spending time as a starter and reliever last season, was 4-1 in 2011 after a 5-1 defeat of the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 4 in California.

He's won just once in seven starts since, however, including a 7-5 loss at Philadelphia on June 10 in which he was roughed up for seven hits and seven runs -- with seven walks -- in 6 1/3 innings.

The 30-year-old faced Milwaukee on April 8 and picked up his first win of the season with six innings of seven-hit, four-run ball in a 7-4 Chicago victory.

He is 13-8 lifetime against the Brewers with a 3.73 earned run average in 185 2/3 innings.

Milwaukee goes with 29-year-old lefty Chris Narveson, who's coming off one of his best efforts of the season in his last start.

The Englewood, Colo. native scattered six hits and struck out six in eight scoreless innings on June 10 against St. Louis to earn an 8-0 victory.

It was his first wins since May 14, when he'd beaten Pittsburgh, 8-2.

Narveson beat the Cubs, 6-0, on April 9 in Milwaukee and is 4-0 lifetime against Chicago with a hold and a 2.70 ERA in 26 2/3 innings.

The Brewers took two of three at home over the Cubs in early April, while the teams split six meetings last year at Wrigley Field.
