White Sox tangle with Twins again at Target Field
Aug 6, 2011 - 3:38 PMVideo
Jake Peavy had his start pushed back to Sunday and Zach Stewart will toe the rubber this evening. Stewart is 0-1 with a 4.86 earned run average in three outings and will make his fourth career start tonight.
Stewart tossed six innings of two-run ball the last time out in a 4-2 loss at Detroit back on June 27. The righty was acquired from the Blue Jays along with Jason Frasor in the trade that sent Mark Teahen and Edwin Jackson to Toronto.
The Twins will turn to Carl Pavano, who is looking to snap a personal four- game winless streak. The last time Pavano was victorious was back in early July when he defeated Chicago.
Since then the veteran hurler is 0-2 in four starts and over his last two games he has surrendered 15 runs on 18 hits in just nine innings. The last two starts for Pavano came on the road, where he has struggled. However, at home the right-hander has been much better, posting a 3.32 ERA in nine starts.
This will be the 12th matchup for Pavano against Chicago and in the previous 11 starts he is 8-3 with a 3.48 earned run average. That includes a victory earlier this year when Pavano held the Pale Hose to just two runs in seven innings.
On Friday, Carlos Quentin went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and Mark Buehrle pitched eight strong innings to power the White Sox past the Twins, 5-3.
Brent Morel collected two hits for the White Sox, who snapped their six-game losing streak and beat Minnesota for just the second time in nine games this season.
Buehrle (9-5) gave up three runs -- none earned -- on four hits while fanning three to stretch his unbeaten streak to eight starts. Chris Sale worked around a Jason Kubel double in the ninth to seal the win.
Kubel belted a two-run homer for the Twins, who have lost five of their last six games. Jim Thome is still two homers shy of 600 in his career and did not play on Friday.
Nick Blackburn (7-9) went 5 1/3 innings in defeat, giving up four runs on seven hits while walking six and striking out one.
Despite the loss Minnesota has still won seven of the nine matchups this season, sweeping a rain-shortened two-game series at home in mid-June.
