Millwood set for Rockies debut against Reds

Aug 10, 2011 - 3:02 PM (Sports Network) - Veteran righty Kevin Millwood makes his first appearance in a Colorado uniform tonight when the Rockies continue a four-game series with the host Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.

Millwood signed a contract with the Rockies to replace injured starter Juan Nicasio, who was hit by a line drive and sustained a broken bone in his neck in a start on Friday.

The 36-year-old, who's won 159 big-league games, had spent the first several months of the season in the minor leagues with both the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox and was granted his release from the Red Sox on Saturday.

Millwood made 16 starts for two Yankees farm teams and one Red Sox minor league club and had a 4.32 ERA with 76 strikeouts in 89 2/3 innings.

The last 13 starts came with Triple-A Pawtucket and saw Millwood go 5-1 with a 4.28 ERA.

He won four times in 31 starts last season with the Baltimore Orioles, one year after winning 13 games in 31 starts for Texas.

For the Reds, second-year righty Mike Leake gets a second chance at a 10th victory of 2011.

An eight-game winner in 24 appearances as a rookie in 2010, Leake improved to 9-6 this year with a 7-2 defeat of San Francisco on July 30.

He dropped a 4-3 verdict to Chicago at Wrigley Field in one subsequent start, allowing three runs on six hits in six innings.

The defeat of the Giants is his lone win in five starts since July 3.

Leake, who has never faced the Rockies, is 6-4 in 12 appearances this season in Cincinnati.

On Tuesday, Troy Tulowitzki hit a two-run homer to power the Rockies past the Reds, 3-2. Dexter Fowler added two hits and an RBI and Carlos Gonzalez scored a run for Colorado, which won for the fourth time in six tries.

Esmil Rogers (6-1) earned the win, giving up two runs on eight hits over six frames.

Ramon Hernandez went 3-for-4 with a run scored and Dontrelle Willis had an RBI triple for Cincinnati, which has dropped five of its last six.

Willis (0-2) was pegged with the loss despite holding Colorado to three runs and five hits and striking out a season-high 10 over eight strong innings. Willis has held opponents to three runs or fewer in each of his six starts this season.

Colorado took five of seven from the Reds last season.
