Kennedy takes aim at 17th win against Padres

Aug 28, 2011 - 2:46 PM (Sports Network) - Ian Kennedy takes aim at his 17th win of the year this evening when the Arizona Diamondbacks complete a three-game set with the San Diego Padres at Chase Field.

Kennedy produced another gem on Tuesday in Washington, as he scattered six hits over seven scoreless innings to run his record to 16-4, while lowering his earned run average to 3.09.

"I wasn't making it easy on myself," Kennedy said. "Not any inning was easy. Every inning seemed like it was a battle. I was just barely missing with my fastball."

The talented right-hander has won eight of his last nine starts, 10 of his past 12 decisions and his .800 winning percentage is the best in baseball.

Kennedy beat the Padres the last time he faced them and is a perfect 3-0 in five starts against them with a 2.40 ERA.

San Diego, meanwhile, will counter with lefty Cory Luebke, who is 5-6 with a 2.91 ERA. Luebke did not get a decision on Sunday against Florida, despite a terrific effort that saw him allow just a run and three hits in six innings. He also struck out eight without walking a batter.

Luebke lost to the D'Backs earlier in the year and is 0-1 against them with a 7.71 ERA in three appearances (one start) against them.

On Saturday, Chris Young belted a two-run homer to back seven solid innings from Joe Saunders, as Arizona pulled out a 3-1 win. Young finished 2-for-3, while Miguel Montero had a pair of hits, including a double for the Diamondbacks, who have won five straight following a six-game slide.

Saunders (9-11) allowed one unearned run on four hits and a walk while fanning three.

Aaron Harang (12-4) gave up three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits over six innings to suffer the loss. He struck out eight.

Arizona has won six of its 10 matchups with the Padres this season.
