Cahill seeks the win column as A's tangle with Mariners

Sep 4, 2011 - 3:02 PM (Sports Network) - Trevor Cahill hasn't won since July 27, but he can turn that around this afternoon when the Athletics try to close out a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners.

A win today would give Cahill double-digit victories for all three years of his major league career. The righty is 0-4 over his last six starts and hasn't won in over a month since beating Tampa Bay. He's 1-8 over his last 12 starts and is 2-4 with a 3.44 ERA in nine games against the Mariners.

Blake Beavan will also try to end a winless stretch this afternoon. The Mariners right-hander is 0-2 over his last four starts, but is coming off a pair of no-decisions to the Angels and Indians. His only career appearance against the A's came August 1 at Safeco Field. In that 8-4 Seattle win, Beavan gave up seven hits and three runs over 6 2/3 innings to earn the victory.

Yesterday, Brandon McCarthy turned in a three-hit shutout, leading Oakland to a 3-0 decision.

McCarthy (8-7) tied a season high with 10 strikeouts while posting his fourth complete game of the year. He stranded Ichiro Suzuki at second in the sixth, then worked around a Josh Bard single in the eighth. Seattle went down in order in the ninth after McCarthy got a standing ovation when he came out to pitch the final inning.

"That was awesome," he told Oakland's website. "It's one of those things where as much time as I've spent hurt and you've got everyone out there and behind you when things are going well, it kind of makes you feel like you're on top of the world."

Cliff Pennington hit a two-run double and Scott Sizemore added a solo homer for the Athletics, who have won three straight.

Michael Pineda (9-9) gave up five hits and three runs over six full frames for the Mariners, who suffered their third loss in a row and seventh in nine games.

The Mariners have won nine of 15 over the Athletics this year.
