Sale goes for White Sox in San Francisco

Aug 12, 2014 - 3:00 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Sale will try to rebound on Tuesday night from a rare setback as the Chicago White Sox kick off a quick two-game set with the San Francisco Giants.

Sale lost for only the second time in 2014 on Wednesday, a 3-1 setback to the Texas Rangers. He yielded a pair of runs on three hits and two walks over six frames, striking out nine.

Both runs allowed came on a homer by Adam Rosales in the second inning and it was Rosales' third home run in 10 career at-bats versus Sale.

"I guess I jinxed myself. I checked [the stats] yesterday just to see, and sure enough, he had two homers," Sale said. "Everyone's got their guy, I guess."

The left-handed Sale won't have to worry about Rosales tonight as he tries to rebound from his first setback since June 12. He is 10-2 with a 2.14 earned run average on the year, striking out 138 to just 22 walks in 122 innings.

Sale, 25, faced the Giants for the first time in his career on June 18 -- his first start after his first setback of the year -- and picked up a victory after giving up three runs and striking out seven over six innings.

Chicago has lost seven of its last nine, losing three of four to Seattle over the weekend. The White Sox lost Sunday's finale 4-2 despite a late rally off Mariners closer Fernando Rodney.

Alexei Ramirez and Jose Abreu singled in the ninth before Adam Dunn and Dayan Viciedo struck out. Conor Gillaspie rolled a base hit up the middle to plate Ramirez and Tyler Flowers was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Rodney, though, buckled down to fan Jordan Danks on three pitches to notch his 33rd save of the year as the White Sox failed to take John Danks off the hook. The starter took the loss after allowing four runs over 6 1/3 innings.

"Johnny pitched a good game," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said of his starting pitcher. "You get a couple infield rollers ... but I thought Johnny pitched well enough to win the game."

Ryan Vogelsong has pitched well enough to win his last two outings and the Giants right-hander tries to make it three in a row tonight.

Vogelsong had dropped five consecutive decisions before a complete-game victory over the New York Mets on Aug. 1. He yielded just one run on two hits and a walk, then followed up with another win over Milwaukee on Wednesday. Vogelsong yielded a run on seven hits and a walk in that one, though he didn't feel as sharp as he did versus the Mets.

"The stuff I was doing last start didn't work today," said Vogelsong. "It was kind of a weird day."

Still, the 37-year-old improved to 7-8 with a 3.77 ERA on the year ahead of his first ever meeting with the White Sox.

Vogelsong will try to end some recent struggles for the Giants, who were swept in three games over the weekend by the Kansas City Royals and have lost five of their past six overall to sit five games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the NL West.

Starter Tim Lincecum gave up six runs on seven hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings for his third straight losing decision.

"It was an uphill climb with the start that we got off to, but they fought," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "They were battling. That's a great sign. That's a tough staff to battle against."

The White Sox won both meetings when they hosted the Giants from June 17-18 and have won five in a row versus San Francisco overall.
