Final/12
Rockies down Padres in 12 innings
Sep 7, 2014 - 6:50 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Drew Stubbs' RBI single in the 12th inning gave the Colorado Rockies a 7-6 win over the San Diego Padres in the second of a three-game set.DJ LeMahieu doubled to start the frame and moved to third on a sac bunt from Charlie Culberson. After Charlie Blackmon was issued an intentional walk, Stubbs punched a single to left and LeMahieu easily scored for the win.
Justin Morneau hit a two-run homer, while Michael McKenry hit a solo home run, drove in two and scored twice for the Rockies, who have won three straight. Nick Masset (2-0) worked a scoreless top of the 12th for the win.
"It would have been nice to put that one away a little sooner, but we found a way to get the W," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss.
Cory Spangenberg hit a two-run homer and Tommy Medica hit a solo home run for the Padres, who have lost four in a row. Jesse Hahn (7-4) allowed the winning run to take the loss.
Neither starter factored into the decision as Jorge De La Rosa went 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits for Colorado, while Joe Wieland lasted just 2 1/3 innings for San Diego and allowed four runs on seven hits.
"Hard fought, both sides," said Padres manager Bud Black. "The Rockies played hard. They're playing hard, we're playing hard."
McKenry's solo homer in the second gave the Rockies a 1-0 lead, and Colorado padded its advantage in the third on Morneau's two-run shot and an RBI single from McKenry.
San Diego got one back in the fourth as Yangervis Solarte hit a two-out double and Jedd Gyorko followed with an RBI single to make it a 4-1 game.
A solo home run from Medica in the fifth cut the Padres' deficit to two.
Colorado, though, got two back in the fifth. McKenry reached on a walk and Josh Rutledge followed with a double before LeMahieu singled with an error to Rymer Liriano on the play allowing both runners to score for a 6-2 lead.
The Padres made it a three-run game in the sixth on an RBI double from Gyorko, and a pinch-hit blast by Spangenberg in the seventh cut the deficit to one.
In the eighth, Solarte led off with a single and Gyorko walked. A fielder's choice left runners at the corners and brought out Rex Brothers from the bullpen. Seth Smith greeted him with a game-tying single.
Juan Nicasio then took the mound and struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
